# WhatsApp

> Understand WhatsApp Business conversations, attachments, and synchronized history.

WhatsApp Business channels use `ticket.channel.type: "whatsapp"` in webhooks. Connection, reauthorization, and synchronization are managed in the YoLead UI.

## Messages and attachments

New incoming messages can include images, documents, video, audio, voice messages, and stickers through the existing [attachment descriptor](https://docs.yo-lead.com/concepts/message-attachments.md). Captions, filenames, and MIME types are included when available. Older stored messages and imported history are not automatically backfilled with files.

In existing chats, employees can send text, one JPEG/PNG photo up to 5,000,000 bytes, or one supported document up to 20 MiB. Documents support TXT, PDF, DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, PPT, and PPTX. An optional attachment caption is limited to 1024 characters. Storage settings can lower file limits. These options also work in Embed with `showSendInput`.

WhatsApp's reply-window and account restrictions still apply. File selection or successful upload does not establish permission to send; the provider makes the final decision. Starting a new outbound conversation requires an approved template. An unresolved sending outcome is not a confirmed failure and must not trigger a blind resend.

## WhatsApp Business App coexistence

For eligible coexistence connections, YoLead can process messages sent from WhatsApp Business App and synchronize available history and address-book contacts during onboarding. Media sent from the Business App can use the same attachment descriptors as other messages.

Imported history is kept separate from new requests and does not trigger AI replies or auto-replies. Importing a contact alone does not create a chat. Availability and completeness depend on the connection mode and data delivered by Meta. A connected account can still require synchronization or have sending restrictions; completing connection does not guarantee that messaging is available.

## File availability

New incoming files are downloaded asynchronously, subject to size, storage, and provider availability. A descriptor does not guarantee that file bytes are already available. Stored files follow YoLead's retention and quota rules. After the local copy is removed, it cannot be restored on demand from WhatsApp. See [Message attachments](https://docs.yo-lead.com/concepts/message-attachments.md#availability-and-history).
